The Immortals series takes place in Tortall after the end of the Song of the Lioness books. The reign of King Jonathan continues. However, Tortall has been invaded by immortal creatures - not all friendly to humans.
Wild Magic tells of how Daine (Veralidaine Sarrasri) has a knack with animals. She can communicate with them. Her family had her tested for magic but none was found. So why can she talk to animals? It could be that she doesn't have the Gift, but a wild type of magic.
